New Delhi, April 22, 2024: World Earth Day, also known as International Mother Earth Day, is an annual event celebrated on April 22nd to raise awareness and promote sustainability for our planet. This global initiative engages around one billion people in activities aimed at addressing the climate crisis and fostering behavioral change to protect the environment.

Originating in the late 1960s, Earth Day gained official recognition in 1972 when the United Nations acknowledged it after peace activist John McConnell proposed the idea at a UNESCO conference. The first Earth Day was organized as a national teach-in on the environment, led by Senator Gaylord Nelson and activist Denis Hayes. The date of April 22nd was chosen to maximize student participation, as it falls between Spring Break and Final Exams. Since then, Earth Day has been celebrated annually on April 22nd, regardless of the day of the week.

This year, World Earth Day 2024 falls on Monday, April 22nd. The theme for Earth Day 2024, as announced by EARTHDAY.ORG, is ‘Planet vs. Plastics,’ highlighting the threat plastics pose to the planet and human health. The goal is to end all plastic waste by demanding a 60% reduction in the production of plastics by 2040. To achieve this, EARTHDAY.ORG has set significant goals, including promoting public awareness of the damage done by plastic, phasing out all single-use plastics by 2030, demanding policies to end fast fashion’s use of plastic, and investing in innovative technologies to build a plastic-free world.

Earth Day is more significant than ever in an era of growing environmental concerns, depleting natural resources, and severe climate change. It serves as a crucial forum for raising public awareness of these issues and inspiring individuals globally to take action. It reminds us of our shared responsibility for the health of the planet and emphasizes the need for collaboration among corporations, governments, communities, and individuals to achieve sustainable goals.
