New Delhi, March 2024: In the early 20th century, North America and Europe began recognizing and celebrating International Women’s Day, a tradition that has since spread globally. Over time, the meaning and significance of this day have evolved, reflecting the changing socio-economic and political conditions of different countries. International Women’s Day represents the quintessence of feminist movements that reshaped the social order all across the world and the Indian subcontinent.
In 21st-century India, while significant strides have been made in improving the status and condition of women, issues such as crime, discrimination, and abuse against women still persist. Despite these challenges, women have excelled in various fields including Corporate, Hospitality, Aviation, Defence, Politics, Arts, and Sports. Women achievers in these fields have not only reached the pinnacle of success but have also inspired others with their belief in themselves and their commitment to independence and self-respect. Their stories serve as a reminder that empowerment begins with self-belief.
According to the United Nations policy, every year International Women’s Day is celebrated with a theme dedicated to women’s independence and rights talk. The theme for 2024 is ‘Invest in Women: Accelerate progress’. Also, ‘Inspire inclusion’ is the campaign theme for Women’s Day.
On this special day, Travellers’ World is privileged to speak with some of these inspiring women achievers, who have broken barriers and paved the way for future generations. Their insights and experiences shed light on their journey to success and the challenges they have overcome along the way.

Starting with a passion for positive workplaces, I overcame challenges like the lack of direct mentorship by refining skills and building relationships. Progress brought trials in change management and leadership, met with support from colleagues and mentors at Clarks. Continuous learning and family support have been key in this rewarding journey.
Q2. Being a woman did you find the journey more challenging?
Swati Agarwal – Honestly, there won’t be a woman who can say confidently that her success journey was smooth and easy. I think all of us face our share of troubles. Of course, being a woman brought its own set of challenges in my journey as well. I had a vision to enter a field that is largely dominated by men. So this meant putting in extra hard work and all the more dedication and commitment towards my goals. I literally had to earn the respect and acknowledgement of my contributions and achievements. However, I never let anything affect me or hold me back. Instead, I used these experiences to channel my emotions towards my goals, advocate for gender equality, and support other women in their careers. No matter what obstacles I had to face, I am proud to be a woman as I have unique strengths and capabilities that empower me. I have broken stereotypes and I have achieved what I envisioned: having a doting family, a successful career, and being an empathetic leader. I am still continuously learning and developing myself, and giving back to society, and I wouldn’t have had it any other way.
Ananya Banerjee – Marketing as a profession is gender agnostic, ever-evolving and never sees a dull moment. The role requires a professional to be creative and expertly manage new challenges with a smile on their face while basking in the adrenaline rush.
Women are known to be multi-taskers and the pandemic helped us in upskilling ourselves to take on various challenges. We have adapted to the role of graphic designers as well, designing menus, artworks, hoardings, social media creatives, and many more on-ground collaterals.
Veenu Rastogi – As a woman in hospitality, I’ve embraced challenges with positivity, focusing on growth and innovation. Diversity in leadership has been key, in fostering inclusivity and dynamic solutions. IHG’s unwavering support for work-life balance has been invaluable, enabling me to excel professionally while nurturing my well-being. Grateful for the opportunities and experiences, I remain committed to leading with passion, integrity, and a pursuit of excellence.
Kowsalya Krishnamurthy – Initially, there were challenges stemming from familial concerns as I was the first woman in my family to pursue a career outside the home. Worries about late-night shifts were prevalent, but with time, I assuaged my family’s fears and received assurances from my mentors and organizations regarding safety. Though some workplaces required additional effort to showcase my abilities, dedication, and tangible results enabled me to progress in my career. I’ve embraced challenges as opportunities for growth, emerging as a stronger professional.
Nilisha Ghuliani – While I cannot speak from personal experience about any specific barriers or biases toward women at Clarks, it’s challenging to address this question directly. However, it’s important to acknowledge broader issues such as gender stereotypes, underrepresentation in leadership roles, pay inequity, work-life balance challenges, and the absence of inclusive policies and practices, which can impact women in various workplaces.
Q3. What’s your opinion about the status of Hospitality in India at present and how bright is the future?
Swati Agarwal – I think the hospitality industry in India is in its prime growth phase. We have seen a shift in customers considering vacations to be experiences that provide unforgettable memories. They are traveling all the more for business, leisure, and even destination weddings, which is leading to higher demand for premium hotels, restaurants, and event spaces. The industry landscape is thus expected to shape up in the future. It is projected to be valued at $31.01 billion by 2029, growing at a CAGR of 4.73% between 2024 and 2029.
Ananya Banerjee – Several factors influence the status and future outlook of the hospitality industry. The industry has embraced technology for contactless services, online bookings, and enhanced safety protocols. Continued innovation in this area may contribute to the industry’s resilience. There is an increasing emphasis on sustainability in the hospitality sector, driven by consumer preferences and environmental concerns. I have also noticed that businesses adopting eco-friendly practices may find favor among consumers.
Veenu Rastogi – The Indian hospitality industry offers dynamic growth and excitement, catering to diverse events from cultural festivals to global conferences. It’s a sector where you can welcome guests worldwide, shape cultural perceptions, manage luxury resorts, plan events, and curate dining experiences. With evolving career paths, from front-line to leadership roles, and emphasis on technology, sustainability, and innovation, there’s limitless potential. Join this thrilling field for a career full of excitement, creativity, and endless opportunities.
Kowsalya Krishnamurthy – The Hospitality industry in India is dynamic, with significant growth potential. It plays a crucial role in the country’s economy and tourism sector. As India continues to develop infrastructure and promote tourism, the future appears promising for the Hospitality industry. However, like any sector, it faces challenges such as evolving consumer preferences and market competition.
Nilisha Ghuliani – Despite challenges, India’s hospitality industry remains promising and resilient. To ensure a bright future, individuals must prioritize continuous education, authenticity, and relationship-building with industry leaders. Patience, emotional intelligence, and skill enhancement are crucial. Women in HR bring diverse perspectives, prioritize employee well-being, excel in communication and collaboration, and advocate for diversity and inclusion, shaping inclusive workplaces and driving organizational success. Leveraging these qualities can enhance innovation, growth, and positive cultures in the industry.
