New Delhi, November 21, 2024 — In a celebratory ceremony held at Roseate House, Women in Aviation India (WAI) recognized 37 outstanding women contributors to the aviation sector at the highly anticipated Giving Wings to Dreams Awards 2024. This year’s theme, “Beti Ki Udaan, Desh Ka Swabhimaan,” emphasizes the empowerment of young girls and the vital role of women in shaping India’s aviation landscape.
The event drew notable figures from the aviation industry, including Shri Vumlunmang Vualnam, Secretary of the Ministry of Civil Aviation, Smt. Usha Padhee, IAS, Principal Secretary of Commerce & Transport in Odisha, and Mr. Vipin Kumar, IAS, Chairman of the Airports Authority of India. Their presence highlighted the importance of the awards and the role of women in the rapidly expanding aviation sector.
Underlining the significance of the awards, Secretary Vualnam stated, “It is a very satisfying moment to see the initiative of Women in Aviation India being applauded at the highest levels of government. We are committed to breaking down barriers for women in this burgeoning industry. The opportunities are enormous, as India’s aviation infrastructure continues to grow, with a projected increase in aircraft fleets and passenger numbers.”
The awards acknowledged women excelling in various aviation categories, including airside operations, flight dispatch, and cabin crew, among others. Notably, professionals from key aviation authorities such as BCAS, DGCA, and CISF were also honored for their significant contributions.
President of WAI, Smt. Radha Bhatia, emphasized the importance of inspiring the next generation of female aviators. “We are on a mission to unite forces to empower young girls and women to pursue careers in aviation. By reaching out to underrepresented areas across India, we hope to light the path for future leaders of the industry,” she remarked.
The Giving Wings to Dreams Awards served as the grand finale of the Girls in Aviation Day programs conducted across 14 cities in India, where thousands of girls were introduced to the world of aviation. Through the initiative “Chhu Lengi Aasman Bharat Ki Betiyan,” WAI has engaged with students, educational institutions, and industry professionals to inspire and cultivate interest in aviation careers among young women.
The event included the recognition of 35 exceptional school girls, named Young Aviation Ambassadors, who received sponsorship for educational courses related to the aviation and travel sectors. This initiative aims to further enhance access to education and opportunities for young women interested in aviation.
For over nine years, the Girls in Aviation Day campaign has made significant strides in advocating for female participation in aviation, impacting more than 30,000 girls nationwide. By connecting with NGOs, schools, and universities, WAI has fostered a supportive community to guide young women as they chart their career paths.
