In the heart of Kenya’s breathtaking landscapes, two leading figures in the hospitality industry, Tuva Khonda H., Sales and Marketing Manager at Eka Hotels, and James Chege, his counterpart at Ol Tukai Lodge, recently sat down with Anirban Dasgupta, Editor of Travellers’ World. In this exclusive interview, they shared insights into their exceptional properties that define luxury and comfort, the culinary delights that showcase local flavours, unforgettable safari experiences, and their commitment to corporate social responsibility. As they delved into their passion for hospitality and sustainability, the conversation illuminated the vibrant spirit of Kenya’s tourism industry.
Thank you for joining us today. To start, what unique elements make Kenya stand out on the world tourism map?
Kenya is truly a jewel on the world tourism map, and several unique elements contribute to its iconic status.
First and foremost, our landscapes are incredibly diverse, ranging from the savannahs of the Maasai Mara to the lush forests of Mount Kenya and the stunning beaches along the Indian Ocean. This variety makes it a dream destination for nature lovers and adventure seekers alike.
Then, there’s the flora and fauna—Kenya is home to some of the world’s most extraordinary wildlife. The chance to witness the Great Migration or see the “Big Five” is something travellers cherish. The National Parks and Reserves offer a unique opportunity to immerse oneself in nature.
Culturally, we are rich and diverse. Kenya has more than 40 ethnic groups, each with its own traditions, music, and art. This diversity allows visitors to engage with a wide range of cultural experiences and community interactions.
Being an equatorial country provides our guests with a warm climate year-round, allowing for year-round travel without weather constraints. Additionally, the local culinary scene is mesmerizing, with influences from Indian, African, and Middle Eastern cuisines, creating a delightful fusion that tantalizes the taste buds.
How have wildlife hotels and lodges, including your properties, adapted to changing traveller expectations and sustainability demands in the post-pandemic period?
Post-pandemic, traveller expectations have shifted significantly, and we’ve embraced this change wholeheartedly. Engaging with local communities has become more crucial than ever; we forge partnerships that benefit both our guests and the locals, creating authentic experiences.
Safety and hygiene are our top priorities. We’ve implemented rigorous sanitation protocols, ensuring that our properties meet international health standards. This dedication to guest safety builds trust and encourages potential travellers to choose our lodge.
Our experiential offerings have expanded, allowing guests to truly experience the wonders of Kenya. Whether its guided wildlife walks, bird watching, or cultural interactions, we aim to provide memorable adventures that go beyond traditional tourism.
We also customize our offers based on ongoing research into traveller demographics and preferences. This adaptability ensures our services align seamlessly with what our guests are looking for.
What are the standout features of your establishments that differentiate them from other hotels and resorts in Kenya, and how do these features enhance the guest experience?
Our establishments are designed to provide unparalleled experiences. We have the unique distinction of being the best location in the world to observe the mist-covered, gigantic elephants with the majestic Mt. Kilimanjaro as a backdrop. This visual allure is often referred to as the “Home of the Gods.”
Strategically located within 10-15 minutes of important airports, our guests can access their lodgings quickly without compromising on the essence of nature.
We pride ourselves on being in the “Green City of Africa,” ensuring that our operations are eco-conscious and that our guests experience the serenity of nature.
Flexibility is a cornerstone of our service. We listen to our guests’ requirements and endeavour to tailor experiences accordingly.
Our culinary offerings, highlighting local and Indian delicacies, contribute significantly to our guests’ enjoyment. We cater specifically to families, ensuring a warm, inclusive environment for travellers of all ages.
How does the lodge incorporate local flavours and culinary traditions into its food offerings to create a memorable dining experience?
India is one of the top sources (6th in the list) of travellers to Kenya, and we recognize their preferences when crafting our culinary offerings. We ensure that our facilities and menus cater specifically to Indian guests, reflecting a deep-rooted cultural connection that exists due to the strong Indian history in Kenya.
Our Indian chefs serve up traditional favourites, whether it’s Masala Dosa at breakfast or a hearty paratha, allowing guests to savour familiar tastes while enjoying the breathtaking African wilderness. This blend of local and Indian cuisine not only satisfies our guests’ palates but also reflects the rich tapestry of cultures in Kenya.
Many Indian travellers are keen to visit Kenya. What tips would you offer them for a seamless experience, and how safe are they for solo and women travellers?
We welcome Indian travellers with open arms. Kenya is extremely safe, and we have measures in place to ensure guests feel secure, whether they’re traveling solo or in groups.
We offer family-oriented hospitality, with customized packages to suit both small and larger families. Our well-trained staff is dedicated to providing personal attention to meet the specific needs of our guests.
Additionally, we have robust support in case of medical emergencies, giving our guests peace of mind during their stay.
Sustainable and eco-friendly tourism is a growing priority. What steps has Ol Tukai Lodge taken to promote sustainability, and what challenges have you faced in implementing these initiatives?
Sustainability is at the heart of our operations. We’re taking a proactive approach by working on roads and infrastructure, especially during floods and natural calamities, ensuring minimal disruption and respect for the environment. Tree plantation initiatives are also a major focus; we believe in restoring and preserving our natural habitats. We source raw materials locally for our infrastructure, reducing our carbon footprint, and supporting local economies.
Our food comes from our own farms, promoting the farm-to-table concept, while solar energy is a significant part of our energy consumption, providing a renewable power source for our operations. We also run programs that educate needy individuals within our surrounding communities about the ecosystem, emphasizing the importance of sustainability. Maintaining a clean and safe environment for our guests is paramount, and we pride ourselves on having one of the cleanest establishments in the region.
We see long-term sustainability not just as our responsibility, but as our goal.
