New Delhi, March, 2025 : A delegation of Virginia tourism leaders is visiting India this week to strengthen connections with the country’s rapidly growing outbound travel market. The visit comes as Indian travelers increasingly seek experiential vacations beyond traditional U.S. destinations.
Led by Virginia Tourism Corporation President and CEO Rita McClenny, the group includes representatives from some of Virginia’s most popular destinations. Over five days in New Delhi and Mumbai, they will meet with more than 100 Indian travel professionals and media outlets to showcase Virginia’s unique blend of scenic landscapes, historic sites, and culinary experiences.
“Indian travelers are discovering that Virginia offers something special beyond the typical American vacation,” McClenny said. “Between our stunning natural beauty, centuries of American history, and world-class hospitality, we’re seeing tremendous interest from visitors looking for immersive experiences.”
The timing of the mission reflects Virginia’s growing popularity among Indian travelers. Since 2019, visitation from India has increased by 76%, making it Virginia’s second-largest overseas market after Canada. Last year, approximately 61,500 Indian visitors explored the state, generating over $105 million in economic impact.
Industry experts attribute this growth to several factors, including Virginia’s diverse tourism offerings that appeal to India’s multigenerational travel market. From the breathtaking vistas of Shenandoah National Park to the living history of Colonial Williamsburg, the state provides numerous opportunities for family-friendly adventures.
Barry Biggar of Visit Fairfax noted that Indian travelers are particularly drawn to Virginia’s combination of educational and leisure experiences. “Whether it’s touring prestigious universities, exploring Civil War battlefields, or enjoying our wine country, Virginia offers meaningful experiences that resonate with Indian visitors,” he said.
The delegation’s visit includes presentations highlighting Virginia’s four-season appeal, with activities ranging from summer hikes along the Appalachian Trail to winter visits to mountain resorts. They’re also showcasing the state’s growing reputation as a culinary destination, with particular emphasis on its thriving wine industry and fresh seafood from the Chesapeake Bay.
As India’s outbound tourism market continues to expand, Virginia’s tourism officials are optimistic about building on this momentum. The current mission aims to forge new partnerships with Indian tour operators while educating travel professionals about the state’s wide range of attractions.
With its convenient East Coast location and reputation for Southern hospitality, Virginia is well-positioned to become an increasingly popular choice for Indian travelers seeking an authentic American experience beyond the usual tourist hotspots.
