The newly launched Vande Bharat Express connecting Srinagar to Jammu has seen an overwhelming response from travellers, with all seats booked for the first 10 days of service. The semi-high-speed train, which officially began commercial operations on June 11, has become an instant favourite, underscoring the region’s growing demand for efficient rail connectivity.
Operated by Indian Railways, the train made its inaugural run on June 9, flagged off by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The service is a landmark moment for Jammu and Kashmir, marking the first time a Vande Bharat Express is running in the Union Territory.
According to railway officials, the bookings for the train were snapped up almost immediately after the reservation window opened. All classes—Executive Chair Car and AC Chair Car—have seen robust demand from both tourists and locals. The 10-day waitlist signals not only the popularity of the route but also the confidence in improved infrastructure and safety in the region.
Running six days a week, the Vande Bharat Express reduces travel time significantly between Jammu and Srinagar. The journey, which previously took over 9 hours via road, now takes just around 6 hours by train, offering speed, comfort, and scenic views of the Pir Panjal range through the Banihal tunnel.
This development is expected to boost tourism and economic activities in Kashmir, especially with the upcoming Amarnath Yatra and the summer travel season underway. Industry insiders believe that consistent high occupancy on the route may prompt Indian Railways to introduce additional services or expand coach capacity.
The Srinagar Vande Bharat Express is part of the larger plan to connect every corner of India with the modern rail network and symbolizes a new chapter in Jammu and Kashmir’s integration with the rest of the country.
