Review by Prof Arunabha Dasgupta
“Robust optimism” is the phrase that singularly characterizes the poem of Minu Bakshi. A person of multiple personalities, Minu offers a chequered career. A multi-linguist, Minu showcases many in one – a philanthropist full of compassion for the underdogs and holds a strong ray of hope for those who lost everything to live for. one critic has aptly suggested that Minu’s poem skillfully juxtaposes the very essence of classical ghazals and lyrical love songs with vehement intensity.
Like great romantic poets Shelley and Keats, her ultimate message to distressed humanity ” if hard times have come they too shall pass / what fate has broken, will mend at last ‘ echoes “if winter comes can spring be far behind”.
Mina’s verses are steeped in intense love of life:” the season of rain has arrived/ let’s sing the song of monsoon tide “.

During the pandemic disaster, the poet, with unwavering faith in the survival of humanity, sings the song of life over death.
In this hour of trouble, make way for the poor,
Let no one go hungry, relief we must offer”.
In an unequivocal tone she continues writing for the dying in general,”salute those who live each night and day, Their service to the sick the offer”. For those who die with no tears pouring Minu’s compassion is relentless ” For each dawn to turn into dusk,/ some prayers must offer.”
Minu does not fail to realize that
“Mankind is full of sadness,
Each face is tense and pale.”
But the other self of the poet asks ” why do you sit so lost Minu”!
Minu Bakshi’s ultimate tone is of incurable optimism.
” come, let’s make a vow today, Plant new trees along the way Let’s repaint the sky is above, And turn the earth green with love”.
