The Mera Gaon Meri Dharohar (MGMD) program of the Indian government has made great progress in recording and conserving the rich cultural legacy of Indian villages. Data for roughly 4.7 lakh of the 6.5 lakh identified villages in India have been uploaded to the MGMD portal as part of this initiative. Data for 14,251 of Tamil Nadu’s 19,219 villages has been successfully mapped and uploaded, demonstrating the state’s advancements in cultural preservation.
The MGMD Program is an all-encompassing endeavor to honor each village’s distinctive heritage, language, and cultural customs. The portal encapsulates India’s rich cultural diversity, from traditional customs to temple architecture and folk arts. Unique customs like Siddha medicine and regional art forms have been painstakingly recorded in Tamil Nadu, underscoring the state’s rich history.
The MGMD initiative’s crowdsourcing feature, which enables local communities to actively participate in the documentation process, is one of its key features. A sense of pride and ownership in conserving their heritage is fostered by encouraging villagers to submit and validate cultural information about their own villages.
Although the program emphasizes raising awareness and preserving culture, it does not yet offer villagers financial or skill-development advantages. Nonetheless, the government is promoting heritage villages through educational programs, digital platforms, and cultural tourism. These initiatives include promoting traditional art forms, promoting participation in cultural events, and raising awareness through educational and digital outreach. Notably, since the efforts are a part of a larger national framework, no initiative specifically targets Tamil Nadu.
Shri Gajendra Singh Shekhawat, Union Minister for Culture and Tourism, emphasized the value of the MGMD program in preserving India’s intangible cultural heritage. He underlined that in addition to maintaining customs, the program strengthens ties between local communities and their heritage.
The MGMD Program’s ongoing growth demonstrates India’s dedication to preserving its cultural diversity and ensuring that the villages’ traditions are preserved for coming generations.
