    Kolkata’s dining landscape welcomed a vibrant new addition with the launch of La Vanakam, a pure-vegetarian restaurant founded by Radhika Jalan and Anshika Jalan that seamlessly blends South Indian authenticity with beloved North Indian classics and irresistible street food favourites. The name “La Vanakam” evokes warmth and welcome—an ethos that permeates every aspect of the dining experience. Located at 10, Wood Street (behind Pantaloons), the thoughtfully designed 1,000 sq. ft. space accommodates 40 diners in an atmosphere that balances nostalgic charm with contemporary comfort, featuring traditional wall art, hand-painted murals, terracotta-inspired lighting and quirky printed tiles that create an inviting ambience perfect for everything from morning breakfast meetings to evening family gatherings.

    La Vanakam’s extensive menu spans the subcontinent’s flavors, featuring signature dishes such as Podi Tatte Idli, Chilli Oil Cheese Dosa, and Malabar Paratha with Chettinad Curry alongside North Indian favorites like Shyam Savera Kofta and Dal Makhani. The restaurant’s street food selection brings playful indulgence to the table with everything from vibrant chaat and kachori sabzi to Kolkata’s beloved Puchkas and Mumbai’s iconic Vada Pav. What sets La Vanakam apart is its commitment to inclusivity as a 100% vegetarian establishment that offers extensive no onion–no garlic options, making it accessible to Jain diners and those with specific dietary preferences without sacrificing flavour or variety.

    “We wanted to create more than just a restaurant—we envisioned a place where food memories are made and families can dine together comfortably and affordably,” said co-founder Radhika Jalan. The restaurant’s commitment to authenticity extends to its sourcing practices, with much of the produce procured locally while key ingredients are sourced directly from South India to preserve traditional flavours and ensure consistency across every dish. “Consistency and quality are cornerstones of the La Vanakam promise. We want every visit to feel as comforting as the last,” added Anshika Jalan, co-founder of La Vanakam.
