JOURNALIST’s DEATH LEADS TO DEBATE ON RESTRICTIONS OF CIVILANS IN RESCUE OPERATIONS
Following the unfortunate incident in Odisha where a journalist lost his life while covering a rescue operation of a stranded wild elephant by Odisha Disaster Rapid Action Force (ODRAF) on 25th Sept , Odisha State Disaster Management Authority ( OSDMA) asked for a review of the standard operating procedures (SOP) for permitting civilians on any rescue operations.
The tragedy took place while dealing with the rescue mission of a wild elephant stranded in Mahananda river. The elephant is reported to have been swept away by the river current. The forest department and ORADF has not yet confirmed the elephants weherabout till today.
Pradeep Kumar Jena , Managing Director of OSDMA has tweeted “ I request Odisha Director -general of Police to review the SOP and order that no outsider, civilian or media personnel should be part of any rescue mission”
