In 2013-14, the total length of National Highways in India stood at 91,287 km. However, it has now surged to an impressive 1,45,240 km in 2022-23, representing a significant rise of over 59% during this period. This expansion showcases the government’s commitment to improving transportation infrastructure across the country.
Shri Gadkari also highlighted the substantial growth in the length of four-lane National Highways, which nearly doubled in the last nine years. Starting at 18,371 km in 2013-14, the four-lane stretch has now increased to 44,654 km, reflecting the government’s focus on enhancing road connectivity and ensuring smoother travel experiences.
The introduction of FASTag, a digital toll collection system, has played a pivotal role in boosting toll revenues. Shri Gadkari shared that toll collections have witnessed a significant increase from Rs 4,770 crore in 2013-14 to Rs 41,342 crore in 2022-23. The government aims to further raise toll revenue to Rs 1,30,000 crore by 2030, indicating the positive impact of technology on revenue generation and transportation efficiency.
Moreover, the implementation of FASTag has significantly reduced waiting times at toll plazas. In 2014, the average waiting time was 734 seconds, which has now been reduced to just 47 seconds in 2023. The government aims to further reduce it to 30 seconds, enhancing the overall travel experience and ensuring smoother traffic flow.
Shri Gadkari highlighted the government’s commitment to sustainable development. NHAI has undertaken initiatives such as tree transplantation, planting 3.86 crore trees, and developing more than 15,000 Amrit Sarovars along the National Highways. The Ministry has also embraced innovative approaches to waste management, utilizing 30 lakh tons of garbage in the construction of the Delhi Ring Road project.
The minister’s vision for increased electric vehicle adoption over the next five years aligns with the government’s commitment to clean energy and reducing carbon emissions. This forward-thinking approach will contribute to a greener and more sustainable transportation sector.
India’s achievements in expanding its National Highway network, adopting technological advancements, and embracing sustainability demonstrate the government’s dedication to transforming the country’s infrastructure and positioning India as a global leader in road connectivity.
