Eight Continents Hotels & Resorts has launched its newest island property, Signature Collection by Eight Continents, Mafia Island, Tanzania, welcoming guests from 1st December 2025. Building on the momentum of its recent expansion in Zanzibar, the new retreat brings the brand’s signature blend of nature-led luxury and culturally rooted hospitality to one of the region’s most untouched coastal ecosystems.

Located in Utende, the property offers seamless access to the famed Mafia Island Marine Park. It positions guests at the doorstep of some of East Africa’s most spectacular underwater landscapes, creating an ideal haven for mindful travellers seeking tranquillity and exploration. The decision to expand into Mafia Island was inspired by the island’s ecological purity — from its vibrant coral reefs and expansive seagrass beds to its pristine white beaches and rich marine biodiversity.

Thoughtfully designed as an Ayurveda-led island sanctuary, the resort features Ocean View and Garden View Chalets, each with private verandas and seating areas that open into serene coastal and tropical vistas. Guests can immerse themselves in on-site Ayurvedic therapies, participate in curated marine experiences, and enjoy a stay that harmoniously blends wellness, nature, and refined comfort — all deeply rooted in Swahili culture and craftsmanship.

Culinary experiences at the property are centred on sustainability and authenticity, with a focus on traditional Swahili cuisine crafted using fresh vegetables grown in the vicinity. Complementing these local flavours is a selection of international dishes curated for global travellers, offering a dining journey that honours local heritage while embracing worldwide tastes.

Commenting on the new property launch, Haninder Sachdeva, CEO, Eight Continents Hotels and Resorts, said, “Mafia Island represents a defining chapter in our Africa journey — one where we are not merely opening a new resort, but expanding the very idea of what purposeful hospitality can be. We believe that destinations with deep ecological and cultural value deserve experiences crafted with equal intention. This property is proof of that philosophy. By merging Ayurvedic wellness with coastal serenity and thoughtful design, we’re offering a retreat where travellers can reconnect with nature and rediscover balance. With every new opening, our commitment stays constant: to shape destinations responsibly, uplift local communities, and build a portfolio ready for the future of global travel.”

The launch of Eight Continents Mafia Island marks a significant milestone in the brand’s broader Africa expansion strategy. As one of the world’s fastest-growing tourism regions, known for its wildlife, islands, beaches, and cultural richness, Africa remains central to the brand’s long-term growth vision. With Mafia Island now part of its Signature Collection and an upcoming property in Dar es Salaam on the horizon, Eight Continents continues to strengthen its presence across high-potential destinations that align with its commitment to thoughtful, experiential, and globally attuned hospitality.
