Mumbai, January 2025: Pongal, the vibrant harvest festival rooted in Tamil tradition, comes alive this January at South of Vindhyas, The Orchid Hotel, Mumbai. From January 14th to 16th, 2025, the restaurant will present a special vegetarian menu celebrating the cultural and culinary essence of Tamil Nadu. The carefully designed menu will be served during lunch (12:00 PM to 3:00 PM) and dinner (7:00 PM to 11:30 PM), offering a true taste of this cherished festival.

Stepping into the South of Vindhyas feels like entering the heart of South India. The warm hues, intricate decor, and traditional touches create an atmosphere where every detail echoes the region’s heritage. Pongal, a festival dedicated to gratitude for a bountiful harvest, marks the beginning of the Tamil month of Thai and honors the Sun, Mother Earth, and the animals that sustain agriculture. It’s a time of togetherness, rituals, and, of course, food.

The menu celebrates these culinary traditions with an array of authentic dishes. It begins with Neer Mor (flavored buttermilk) and Panakkam (sweet tangy cooler), followed by soul-warming Tomato Rasam and chef-curated starters. The main course showcases festive specialties such as Vazhakkai Kootu (raw banana preparation), Karamani Poriyal (long bean stir fry), and Ezhudhan Curry (seven vegetable medley), served alongside Appam, Kal Dosa, Poori, and flavorful rice dishes like Paruppu Sadam and Paruppu Kadiyal with ghee. The celebration is completed with the festival’s signature sweet Pongal preparations.

More than just a feast, this experience at South of Vindhyas is an ode to Tamil Nadu’s deep-rooted traditions. It’s a space where the flavors, colors, and spirit of Pongal come together to create an unforgettable celebration of culture and gratitude. Enhancing the authenticity, the staff will be dressed in traditional South Indian Saree, kurtas and dhotis, adding a genuine touch of Tamil nadu’s rich heritage to your dining experience.
