HOW ABOUT A SPECIAL MOTHER-DAUGHTER ESCAPE?
Picture friends on an extended trip, venturing to destinations such as Goa, Manali, Ladakh, Paris, Ubud, Pattaya, or Istanbul… Did you envision a group of young men, perhaps reminiscent of scenes from Bollywood films like ‘Dil Chahta Hai’ or ‘Zindagi Na Milegi Doobara’? The new generation is redefining this narrative, with women embracing their wanderlust and traveling together.
An upcoming new-age, niche trend is mom and daughter trips, an off-shoot perhaps of the larger trend of women friends travelling together. According to the Skyscanner Horizons 2023-2024 report, 63% of Indians have budgeted more for travel this year. With more women working and having control over their finances, as well as increasing social acceptance in the urban milieu, these trends will continue to snowball.
Women are making strides in all areas of travel as seen with the emergence of nice travel groups, such as True Joy Travels, with offerings for senior women and an upcoming mother-daughter trip to Goa.
Travelling with your tribe, be it friends, sisters, mothers, or daughters, creates an atmosphere of freedom. One where you can embrace your inner spirit and connect in a stress-free, happy atmosphere. Seasoning life with a pinch of those khatta-meetha happy moments that make all the difference.
Sounds intriguing? Here are three diverse women-exclusive travel experiences, that might inspire you to plan a getaway for the next special occasion with your mother.
Temple Trails & Coastal Cuisine in Mangalore
My mother and I have always been keen on trying out the Vistadome (glass top) coach Mangaluru- Bengaluru train that passes through enchanting waterfalls, tunnels and valleys of the Western Ghats. We finally made it this January. After the long train journey, we relaxed for two nights by a sleepy beach town. Exploring the Someshwar Beach, offering prayers at the quaint Manjunatha temple and savoring the world-famous Gud Bud ice-cream and Mangalore Buns along with some lesser-known dishes like pathrode which are steamed, savoury cakes made from rice and Colocasia leaves.
Reliving Bollywood Nostalgia at Ooty
Framed by verdant green slopes of fir, pine and eucalyptus trees, this romantic hill station has captured the imagination of not just travellers but also filmmakers. The Nilgiri Mountain Railways appear in the Chhaiya Chhaiya song in Dil Se, Ooty’s Botanical Gardens seen in ‘Kabootar Ja‘ song and Wenlock Downs features in Kuch Kuch Hota Hai.
Eileen Soreng, a Bengaluru-based media professional, says “I’ve often travelled with my mother. Once we were in UP for a wedding and took off to explore the monuments in Delhi and Agra. Another time, we visited Ooty, which was on my mother’s wishlist having seen it in many Bollywood movies of yester years.” Elaborating on the emotional impact of these experiences, Eileen adds “She spent most of her life bringing up me and my sibling. Now that we have the means, I do want her to experience places she has only heard of or seen on TV and print.”
Cycling Birthday Weekend by Cauvery River
Another IT professional, Prateeti Shukla, agrees, adding “I recently took my 13-year-old daughter and 5 of her school friends to a river side homestay on the outskirts of Srirangapatna for her birthday celebration. With bonfires, simple homey meals served on rocks by the riverbed, pretty cycling trails and dorm-style rooms – it was a birthday party with a fun twist. One that will be remembered forever.” Located near the heritage city of Mysore, Srirangapatna is a popular staycation spot for IT professionals in the nearby metro of Bengaluru.
