India, October 21, 2024: Generative AI has emerged as a leading priority for the travel technology sector as it looks toward 2025, according to a new report by Amadeus, titled “Navigating the Future: How Generative Artificial Intelligence is Transforming the Travel Industry.” However, the optimism surrounding its deployment is tempered by a range of emerging challenges.
Surveying over 300 industry experts, the report found that 46% identified Generative AI as their top priority for the upcoming year, significantly outpacing other technologies. In the Asia Pacific region, this figure rose to 61%, suggesting a readiness to adopt this transformative technology. Other technologies highlighted included data management (38%), cloud architecture (36%), non-generative AI IT infrastructure (34%), and biometric technology (23%).
According to the findings, over half (51%) of travel technology leaders believe that Generative AI is already significantly present in their countries, while 36% anticipate its emergence in the next year. A mere 2% expect a significant presence to take more than three years. Currently, 41% of travel companies have the necessary budget and resources to implement Generative AI, with 87% willing to collaborate with third-party vendors for application development.
Despite the enthusiasm, the report notes several challenges hindering the technology’s rollout. Key concerns include data security (35%), talent shortages and lack of training (34%), inadequate data quality and technological infrastructure (33%), ROI uncertainty (30%), and challenges in vendor partnerships (29%). As organizations grapple with these issues, they are also striving to attract skilled professionals and secure data to justify investments in Generative AI.
The report also outlines practical applications of Generative AI, with digital assistance for travellers during booking leading at 53%. Other use cases include personalized activity recommendations (48%), content generation (47%), enhanced customer service (45%), and condensing post-travel feedback (45%).
