Saadiyat Cultural District will soon welcome teamLab Phenomena Abu Dhabi, an immersive art installation set to open to the public on April 18, 2025. The announcement was made by the Department of Culture and Tourism—Abu Dhabi (DCT Abu Dhabi), along with Miral, a developer of immersive destinations, and teamLab, a Tokyo-based art collective.
Spanning 17,000 square meters, the exhibition will house large-scale interactive installations designed to evolve continuously, influenced by their surrounding environment. Developed under teamLab’s ‘Environmental Phenomena’ concept, these artworks will not exist independently but will respond dynamically to external conditions, creating an ever-changing visitor experience.
A Transformative Artistic Concept
The project is being developed with architectural contributions from teamLab Architects and Abu Dhabi-based MZ Architects. Unlike conventional exhibits, the installations at teamLab Phenomena Abu Dhabi will integrate natural elements such as air, water, and light to generate interactive experiences. According to teamLab founder Toshiyuki Inoko, the concept challenges the traditional notion of art as a static object, instead positioning it as an ever-adaptive entity that relies on its surroundings to exist.
One such exhibit, Massless Suns and Dark Suns, presents illuminated spheres that alter their appearance and intensity when touched, triggering ripple effects throughout the display. Another installation, Levitation Void, showcases a floating entity that hovers freely within its environment, responding to external interactions and maintaining its position through adaptive energy distribution.
Abu Dhabi’s Expanding Cultural Landscape
Saadiyat Cultural District is emerging as a major global hub for arts and culture. The addition of teamLab Phenomena Abu Dhabi aligns with the district’s ongoing efforts to cultivate cultural exchange and artistic innovation. Currently, the district houses notable institutions such as the Louvre Abu Dhabi and Manarat Al Saadiyat. Future additions include the Zayed National Museum, the Natural History Museum Abu Dhabi, and the Guggenheim Abu Dhabi.
Tickets for teamLab Phenomena Abu Dhabi will be available for purchase online, offering visitors an opportunity to experience one of the most technologically advanced art installations in the region. The exhibit aims to redefine artistic interaction by blending science, technology, and natural forces to create an environment where no two visits are identical.
