On an ordinary Wednesday, wine connoisseurs and enthusiasts alike gathered for no ordinary evening. The ARTS ROOM was transformed into a haven for oenophiles, bathed in the warm glow of anticipation and aromatic notes drifting all around. The event, titled “Bold and the Beautiful,” was meticulously curated by none other than Sommelier Varun — a name synonymous with expertise and passion for the vine, as we soon found out.
Varun’s handpicked ‘flight’ of four exquisite wines set the stage for an evening where every pour was a story, and every bite, a revelation. The pairing of each wine with a thoughtfully chosen canapé promised not only a gustatory delight but a journey through history, geography, and personal preference.
Aged to Impress: A Journey Begins in Germany
The evening commenced with an unforgettable 1959 Gewurztraminer from Germany — a rare vintage treasured for its complexity and age. Varun’s tales of the wine’s origins, the climate of its birth, and the intricacies of aging set the tone for the tasting. Paired with a delicate Cheese Borek and a hint of truffle aioli, the Gewurztraminer’s aromatic floral notes and balanced acidity provided a harmonious start that danced on the palate.
Argentina to the Fore: Rutni Chardonnay Steps In
The next stop was Argentina, as the Rutni Chardonnay made its appearance. This wine, fresh yet elegantly structured, was matched with Prawn Molho and flaky Khari — a pairing that melded the sea’s sweetness with the wine’s subtle oak and vibrant fruit character. For many, including myself, this was a clear highlight: a delightful dialogue between food and wine.
The Australian Outbound Jack Chardonnay: Personal Favourites Shine Brig
Of the four, the Outbound Jack Chardonnay from Australia captured my heart — and taste buds. Its slow, lingering finish, nuanced layers, and the unique terroir of its homeland created a perfect symphony on my palate. Varun reminded us that, ultimately, it’s personal preference that reigns supreme, while geography, climate, and tradition influence each pour’s final character.
A French Finale: Bordeaux Rouge and Campania Pizza
The journey crescendoed in France, with the Premiums Bordeaux Rouge — a classic red blend of Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Cabernet Franc from the esteemed Bordeaux region. Paired ingeniously with Campania Pizza, the wine’s deep notes and robust structure complemented the pizza’s rustic charm, highlighting the artistry of both vineyard and kitchen.
The ARTS ROOM Experience: More Than Just Wine
With smooth, attentive service and an inviting and yet mystic ambiance, the ARTS ROOM offered more than a meal or dégustation — it gifted a memorable escape, underscored by laughter, learning, and the shared pleasure of discovery.
As glasses were raised and emptied, the evening lingered in memory as a celebration not just of wine, but of the rich tapestry it weaves: through time, across continents, and into the hearts of all who taste.
